Can Eating Too Much Fruit Cause Diabetes?

August 17th, 2010 § Tags: , , , Posted in Causes of diabetes § § 7 comments

I know fruits have a lot of sugar in it. But it’s not the refined sugar as in chocolate and candy. So I was wondering if eating too much fruit can cause diabetes?

Answer
You cannot get diabetes from eating sugar, any type of sugar. That is a myth. You get type 1 when you are born with antibodies then you get an illness or allergy (doctors think) and those antibodies attack your insulin producing cells making you produce less and less insulin until you prduce no more. Type 2 your body is resistant to the insulin your body produces usually from being overweight, consuming large amounts of red meat often, and your genetics.

As the saying goes, too much of everything is bad for you. So yes, eating too much sweet fruits can somehow increase your risk of diabetes. If you love eating fruits, you can eat them as long as you regulate your portions. Though fruits are good for the body, you still need to be conscious of how much you are eating.

Diabetes is an auto immune disease. Although type 2 is age and lifestyle related eg. old age & obesity. So to answer your question, no, eating too much fruit cannot cause diabetes. So eat away, fruit is good for you.
