    let’s see…
for a month before i was diagnosed i was always craving really high carb foods and drinks, i was drinking maybe 2 gallons of water every day and urinated almost uncontrollably what felt like every 5 minutes (even in my sleep… i have no shame), i was constantly tired or already sleeping, and my eyes were always blacked like i had either been punched or hadn’t slept in weeks, but didn’t get hit, and i obviously slept a lot.
Sunday, January 16, 2005. i’ll never forget it. we got up that morning to go church… i was wearing a rather thin shirt. when i leaned over to tie my shoes my mom could count each one of my vertebrae trough my shirt, she noticed i was REALLY skinny. i hopped on a scale, i was 13 years old, 5’10″ and only weighed 83lbs. she ran me to the hospital just to find out my blood sugar was 983, the doctor said i was lucky to be alive, or even conscious for the matter. it took 3 days of constant care to bring me down to even 300. ever since then, i have had an A1C average of about 6.5-7.0

    I’m Type 2, was diagnosed at 28.
I had begun, over the course of a month or so, to notice that I was drinking a lot more than usual, and going to the restroom more than usual. This was really not very noticable, because how do you know how often you SHOULD be going to the restroom? I guess it really got to me that I was just THIRSTY all the time.
I’d lost about 10 pounds over the course of maybe 3 weeks. I’d always said I needed to, and I had been trying to eat more fruits. I didn’t realize this was bad at the time, and I didn’t know if this was a symptom or just good luck.
What prompted me to go see a doctor, over the course of 2 or 3 days, my vision started to blur. I’ve never worn glasses, and never needed them. I didn’t even know that this was a symptom — I’m a computer programmer, so I spend all of my time on the computer. Maybe my eyes were just going bad? But, I went to the doc to be sure — Diabetes runs in my family.
Yep, I was diabetic. I actually had a couple of other symptoms too, that I didn’t even realize were symptoms at the time. I was also craving sweets — I had a smoothie almost every day, loved my baked potatoes and rolls. I couldn’t get enough.
The most noticeable thing after my diagnosis was my energy level! It’s only been about 4 months now, I’ve dropped around 30 pounds, and I have excellent control of my sugars. I have SO MUCH ENERGY. Looking back, I was certainly experiencing the fatigue as well, I never wanted to do anything, stayed at home all the time.. Now, I feel fantastic. I’m the one prompting my wife into activities. “Let’s go out!” It NEVER used to be that way.
So, it’s really hard to tell that you’re diabetic by the symptoms — specially with T2′s as they present themselves slowly over a longer period of time.
THAT’s why people are always saying “Go to the doctor!” or “Get a glucometer and test your sugar!” These are really the best ways to tell. By the time you start having enough symptoms to notice them, your blood sugars are out of control, and have likely been that way for at least a few months — people more in denial than I was can be that way for YEARS before noticing. I’ve read about people not going to the doc until they get an ulcer on their foot that won’t heal, gets gangrenous, and nearly needs amputating. It can take YEARS to get that bad.
So, if you have questions, go to the doctor, or at least get a glucometer! Even if you just suspect that maybe, there’s a small chance that you could, but you probably don’t. It’s always better to be safe.
