Nicole, please call your pediatrician, right now. This does not sound normal and it’s best for your doctor to make a diagnosis, not a bunch of strangers on a website.

There is so much confusion over diabetes. For a child which would have juvenile or Type I diabetes hereditary has absolutely nothing to do with it. A child having many adults with Type II diabetes or adult onset has no greater chance of Type I diabetes than a child with no family history. Currently Type I is said to be the result of a virus or other illness that the child has had that for whatever unknown reason has attacked the pancreas and the result is diabetes. Type I or juvenile diabetes is ALWAYS insulin depend ant. While diet is very important for control diet cannot revers it which is not the case with Type II diabetes which can be brought on by obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise. On occasion an older child can be diagnosed with Type II but all the factors must be considered first. Meantime your pediatrician can test her and the sooner the better.

I appreciate your question, as it’s valid and a concern for you at this time. You’re intuition is telling you that something isn’t right and is causing you to question possibilities such as diabetes. There are several reasons for all the symptoms you listed, some of which are growth spurts and certain foods, juices, vitamins, medications that can cause increased thirst and strong odor. Since you trust your intuition and your hunch that perhaps something is to be investigated, call your pediatrician or local family doctor and have them check her blood sugars which is easily done and will create an ease of mind for you. Light and blessings

    hi you
i am basing my answer on the part of your question alone and nothing else OK if diabetes runs in your family i would have your daughter tested for diabetes as she would be at a high risk due to it running in your family i know you this this will solve to problem then for you on the spot (1) you will know for sure if she has it or not and (2) you wont be worrying yourself to death about it. if the test result shows that she does not have it will be no harm to get her tested regular

you need to contact her doctor and get he sugar read, if it runs in the family then someone has a glucose tester, test her levels see what they are they run the same as a adult fasting under 100 after eating under 110 is her readings are higher than this then she may be diabetic (is she over weight? if she is the first thing you need to do is put her on a diet) GOOD LUCK

The symptoms for kids is the same as adults. You child is showing symptoms and you need to have her tested as soon as possible. She has a high risk factor.

I can’t tell you what your daughter has … but my 2 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 6 months ago, and I can tell you what she went through.
The first thing I noticed is that she started peeing a lot. Especially at night, she would pee so much her diaper couldn’t hold it.
And then she was drinking a lot more liquids.
The next thing I noticed is that she was losing weight. She was always a little chubby, and would thin out during growth spurts, so we didn’t think a thing of it.
Then she quit eating. But when you say that your child is always hungry and always eats, that is a symptom too. That is usually a symptom of an older child, the younger ones will usually either eat tons or quit eating altogether.
So I take her to the doctor, and of course he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with her. She’s drinking a lot and peeing a lot, not eating and losing weight. He considered testing for diabetes, but he wanted a urine sample and we were having trouble getting one, so he just said to cut back on her liquids.
When we tried to cut her back, she would start crying in this really terrible way … like she was in pain. Fortunately I knew my child well enough to know there had to be something else going on, so I started giving her all the liquids she wanted again.
And she had a very marked decrease in energy. She didn’t want to play as much, just wanted to cuddle.
A few days later she started peeing so much more at night. She peed out of 4 diapers that night (she sleeps with me, so I knew immediately) … I changed the bedclothes the first two times and then gave up and just set towels down after that
The next morning I managed to get a urine sample from her myself. I took it up the doctors and insisted they test it. And she was admitted to the hospital later that day.
As for your situation, family history only matters if your family had type 1 diabetes, and then it doesn’t matter that much. Having a history of type 2 diabetes doesn’t matter at all, the two types are not interchangeable.
I don’t know about the strong smelling urine … I don’t remember my daughter’s having a strong smell.
I think the most important thing to remember is that you know your child best. If she has diabetes, you’re going to notice that something is definitely wrong.
Many doctors don’t have a clue about what type 1 diabetes is. So take her up to the doctor’s and make him give her a diabetes test. If he won’t see you guys right away, take her to the hospital. If she does have it, it can be that serious. If they insist on a urine test, that’s fine. But if you guys are having trouble getting a sample, demand that they do a fingerprick test. They’re just testing the urine for ketones … and if ketones are present then her blood sugars are most likely going to be high enough that they can tell by that. My daughter’s blood sugars were in the 400 – 600+ range when she was diagnosed … and it would have been immediately obvious she had diabetes at the first visit if they had tested blood from her finger.
And if she is diagnosed, please remember that type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. She developed it because it was in her genes, and you did not do anything to cause it. It doesn’t matter what her diet is before, or how much exercise she gets. So don’t go blaming yourself :o )
    –edit–
MamaSmurf comes here a lot and posts, yet never seems to learn anything new. The symptoms for kids can be a little different than for adults, as I stated.
