For The People Who Say They Gained Like 60 And 70 Pounds?

Not being critical, just would like to know how it happened so that I do not gain that much. So far I am 23 weeks and have gained 9 pounds. How is it that you gained 60 and 70 pounds and how should i go about preventing it?
In other words, if you had it to do over, how would you prevent yourself from gaining the weight or was it something uncontrollable like gestational diabetes?

I gained about 30 pounds, but I was about 30 pounds over my ideal weight (about 165 on a 5’4″ frame) when I got pregnant. And most of that 30 piled on early days.
While some cite willpower, I think there’s a very real challenge for women who work during their pregnancy. (And hey, these days, who doesn’t?!) So I’ll pass this on because if I hadn’t realized what I was doing, I’d probably have gained more like 50 pounds.
If you work in a place without a kitchen, you’re faced with bringing in or going out for all of your dietary needs.
So if your snacks need to live in a desk drawer, you might find yourself eating A LOT of granola bars. And if you’re going out or relying on convenience stores/delis/vending machines, your choices might even be more nutritionally bankrupt – pretzels at best, Snickers at worst.
While some of the choices – granola bars, pretzels – aren’t bad, none of them are ideal if you’re trying not to pack on the pounds. And a lot of the “oh-my-I’ve-eaten-my-last-granola-bar-an… snacks are FAR worse – see the Snickers reference, above.
I was also drinking a lot of fruit juice, because I figured it was the healthiest thing in the vending machine and I didn’t dare drink Coca-Cola. *Smacks head against desk.* You probably already know that this was a foolish choice, but it took me a few weeks to get wise to the empty calories I was drinking down.
Anyway, I got in the habit of bringing in lots and lots of fruit and veggies, and maybe a reduced fat string cheese or two in a little cooler. Not only did it stabilize my weight – I went nearly 8 weeks without gaining more than a pound – my energy was a lot more consistent throughout the day.
I lost the baby weight almost immediately, but I didn’t drop the excess pounds until I stopped working full-time, learned how to cook and figured out what healthy food really is. As a working mom raised by a working mom, I must say I just plain didn’t know.
My best sense is that if you already have healthy eating habits, your chances of gaining lots of weight are minimal. But if you’re like me, with borderline habits, pregnancy can push you over into the nutritional abyss … or be a chance to get on the right path for good. We’re TTC#2, and I’m confident that, barring complications, I can keep my weight gain to a healthy minimum this time around.
    Best wishes!

Well, they say women do not need to gain more than 30 lbs. I gained 25lbs when I was pregnant. Just make sure you are eatting healthy, and dont eat everything in site. Stay active also. I worked up until my water ruptured, working 8-10 hours a day everyday on my feet all day long. And once I got home I never really relaxed. I kept myself going. As long as you dont overeat, using pregnancy as an excuse and stay active, you shouldnt gain over 30 lbs. Alot of my friends who had babies, they would eat nonstop, alot of fast food, and didnt stay active or exercise, and they all gained over 50 lbs. Unless its a medical condition, or your on bed rest, there is no excuse for that much weight gain.

My last pregnancy I gained 55 lbs. I literally took “eating for two” to the heart. I ate like I was feeding another adult! That’s how that happened. I ended up getting tested for gestational diabetes and I didn’t have it.
I am pregnant again and plan to only put on 45 lbs this time. It took me f-o-r-e-v-e-r to lost the weight. I basically eat what I want, just in moderation and in six small meals a day. I am consciously making better decisions about what I eat.

  • Westende says:

Sometimes it’s a disease and sometimes and most often it’s the lady over indulging thinking she should literally eat for two, forgetting the child is only going to weight 6-10 lbs at birth. I was on bedrest the entire pregnancy and gained 30 lbs on my last pregnancy. My first pregnancy, I worked and moved around and ate the same and gained 30 lbs-go figure lol~!

The people who gain 60 or 70 pounds during pregnancy, are of course gaining weight from the pregnancy, but this is not the only factor. Most likely they are taking things easy and not burning many calories, (this is fine, they are pregnant!), however, they are most likely over eating as well, either they are craving more food dur to hormonal changes, they are bored sitting around, they are using the pregnancy as an excuse to gain weight, or they are misinformed on the amount they nee to eat when pregnant. So, to keep from gaining too much weight during the pregnancy you have to eat healthy, (do not undereat however!!!), and stay positive. Don’t be afraid to gain weight, but still stay healthy. Eat good foods, and good portions. My mother actually lost a couple pounds when she was pregnant with me because her doctor had her on such a strict diet! She went from a little chubby to lean with a big belly! It’s all about how you approach the pregnancy. Good luck on your pregnancy! I’m sure everything will go perfectly! :)

it’s just comfort eating I guess. I’m 31 weeks pregnant with baby #1 and I gained 28 lbs so far.. I think this is already too much and I really look forward to lose the weight after baby is born!!!

  • ANN says:

Its a mistake to eat for two. You should still take care of yuor body and eat healthy food. Dont eat junk food and drink a lot of water and walk a lot.

  • Ashby says:

I’m 31 weeks and have gained 30 pounds. I figure I’ll have gained about 40 pounds when it’s all over with. But everyone carries their baby weight differently. Thirty pounds may sound like a lot, but every pound I’ve gained is in my belly! You can’t even tell I’m pregnant if you look at me from behind. I’m very proud of the way I’m carrying my baby weight! And I haven’t been overeating or doing anything terrible to gain the 30 pounds. It just happened and my doctor is not concerned, so neither am I.

I had gained 35 lbs by week 28 but gained 20 of that in 6 wks.. So that was TOO MUCH, i was eating like crazy so this last month i ate super healthy & walked 30 min a day & lost 5 lbs.. I don’t think i’m gaining anymore weight.. If anything i’ll continue losing.. Being pregnant is not an excuse to eat whatever you want.. I wish i had started eating healthy & walking from wk 1, not week 28!! Lol. Take care!!

  • deanna says:

some women are underweight when they get pregnant so it is healthy for them to gain a bit more. i gained a bit over 40, but a lot of it was just fluid retention, as i had already lost over 20 of it by the time i left the hospital. you also gain more if you are pregnant with multiples.
to the person who said anything over 35 is disgusting- what a rude and insensitive thing to say. some women do go overboard with eating, but others have legitimate reasons that they gain more than that- medical or otherwise.

  • giftfrom says:

Ooh feeling a little smug, are we? Must be your first. You never put on much for your first, especially if you’re young. At 23 weeks though, you just might be a little concerned that your baby might be underweight, because a lot of that weight is water and placenta.
You gain 60 to 70 pounds when you have a husband, other children, you’re tired, fed up and life generally sucks. That’s when happiness is just beyond the next potato chip.
Eat healthy, even though it sucks too.

  • i_heart_ says:

I hadnt gained a single pound at my 20 week appointment and still managed to gain 45 in the last 20 weeks. I really regret it. I’ve lost it all now but I wont make the same mistakes in my next pregnancy. Being pregnant is not an excuse to eat anything you want. Icecream, candy, everything you can get your hands on. Just eat sensibly

  • erinjl12 says:

Eat healthy and maintain normal activity. I gained 60lbs with my second pregnancy. It was from not eatting right and not continuing my normal activity. I will openly admit that. Some people will not. With my first pregnacy I gained 40lbs with my 3rd I gained 14 lbs. With my 4th I am 11 weeks and 5 days and still at lost 5 lbs.

  • fwprynce says:

you cant really prevent from gaining weight during pregnancy and if you do prevent then you are neglecting your baby’s needs of nutrition. i gained 32 pounds while pregnant and the day i left the hospital i didnt bring a pound of that home .remember the weight you’re gaining goes to the baby, the placenta, double your blood volume, your water sac, everything .so dont be so pressured to look good during pregnancy

  • orphan annie says:

I gained 52 pounds with my first pregnancy. I worked at a fast food restaurant and ate there every day that I worked. I didn’t care how much I gained and didn’t watch anything that I ate. With my second pregnancy I gained 32 pounds and it was soooo much easier to lose after giving birth, I also went back to work 10 days after having her, and with my third pregnancy, I gained 37 pounds and still haven’t got it all gone and it is going on 2 years.

  • paulas14 says:

Before i got pregnant i weighed 110 @ 9 months i weighed 160.. and after having my baby i weigh 145 . i was soooooo upset .. if i was you i would not over eat allot .. i did that allot .. and know i suffer the consequences .. do allot of walking too

  • .andrea. says:

some people genetically are prone to gain more weight without any reason. they can eat healthy (not for 2.!!!!!) and excersize (sp.?) and still gain a lot of weight. if you’re only 23 weeks and gained 9 pounds, you shouldnt have anything to worry about. you’re more then halfway through, but in your last trimester you’ll gain a lot more weight. stay healthy, take walks, and remember to eat healthy. eating for 2 is a mistake, and it can cause you to gain a lot of unwanted weight. good luck.!

what is this big obsession with weight gain during pregnancy? a woman is supposed to gain weight during pregnancy, and there is a link between weight gain and healthy baby size. ive never met anyone who purposely pigged out during pregnancy, and in my own case always felt too nauseaus or exhausted to overdo it on food.
    in my case :
    baby no.1 – gained 24 lbs / baby weighed 7lbs
    baby no.2 – gained 70+ lbs / i had toxemia /baby weighed 9.5lbs
during both pregnancies i was active, didnt eat for 2, and looked a bit too gaunt after giving birth.
im 23 weeks with twins at the mo and have gained 30lbs already, am definately not eating for 3, and cant walk/move due to a pelvic disorder. i do worry about losing the weight this time because im in my mid 30s and was in early 20s having my first 2.

  • adriane d says:

I only gained 28 pounds the enitre time. People like to use their pregnancy as an excuse to eat more. Gaining more than 35 lbs. is disgusting.

  • professo says:

They won’t answer. I can answer for them-THEY pigged out ALL DAY, EVERY DAY – they acted as if being pregnant gave them the license to eat anything they wanted.
Normal weight people know its those everyday decisions you make that keep you thin/normal. You are fine- from now on you should gain nearly a pound a week. If you find extreme gains please have your BP- edema checked.
