Lately I’ve felt terrible. I always crave protein and get shaky fits. Could it be possible that there’s something else wrong with me? I just recently got a blood test and my blood sugar hasn’t undergone any drastic changes and is still low, but not dangerously low. Would a steady blood sugar be a good indicator that my hypoglycemia hasn’t worsened and it’s something else? Could my hypoglycemia get worse without a blood sugar drop? I have lost some weight and I’m a very skinny guy, if that helps at all.
Answer
Jstevens – First, and most important is to verify whether you truly have hypoglycemia. Were your blood samples drawn fasting in the morning or a couple of hours after a meal when you were feeling any effects of hypoglycemia? Hypoglycemia usually leads to a craving for readily absorbable sugar, NOT protein. On you lab test result slips, is the lab’s normal blood sugar range listed, and do you remain below the lowest value? So-called “normal values” are for about 95% of people while 5 % may have lower or high values and still be normal. It’s best to work with a physician internist or your general practice doctor. Don’t YET accept the diagnosis of hypoglycemia without further confirmation.
