Long Term Effects Of Diabetic Letting Sugar Get Too Low?

My dad is a diabetic and he is not very responsible with his sugar intake. Recently he has changed his brand of insulin, and i think it may be too strong or something b/c he has been having a lot of “episodes” with his blood sugar…where it gets waaaay to low. and it seems like what used to be a borderline sugar reading 45-50 or so is now so low that he can’t think straight.
Do repeated episodes of letting the blood sugar “bottom out” take a negative toll on brain function?
Is it possible to have a negative reaction form long and short acting “contaminating” before an in jection? (like accidentally mixing the two when drawing it from the vial)
What are the best things for getting the sugar up once it has bottomed out?

Yes it will have a negative toll on his brain function. Low blood sugars kill brain cells. You don’t get those back. Going too low can cause brain damage, coma, even death. Another side effect of going too low too often is hypoglycemia unawareness. This is when your body no longer recognizes the symptoms when your blood sugar is too low.
Best treatment is something really sugary, regular soda, fruit juice, candy, glucose tablets. You should also have a glucagon kit on hand just in case he goes too low and is unconscious and unable to consume a sugary snack.

Wow, continual low blood sugars can do severe damage to the brain. He either isn’t eating enough or he is getting too much insulin. I would definitely have him contact his doctor as soon as possible to fix this.

I am just worried that one day your dad will have a diabetic coma. If your dad is still awake when he has his hypoglycemic episode, you can let him have a glass of orange juice. I usually give them a sugary drink when I am at work. In some instance, we give them a glucogel called hypostop. they said it tastes awful but if does work. if sugar is not going up, you have to phone the paramedics so that they can give dextrose 50 IV.

boy oh boy……..your dad has no regards as to what can happen….lets say death……the best thing to do when sugar is low is mix two tablespoons of sugar in a glass of oj and have him drink it, then take himm to emeregency room right away, actually just call 911…..you might want to talk to your doc about this irresponsibility behaviour that your dad has adopted…..almost lost mom because of diabetes
