Once A Diabetic, Always A Diabetic….right?

doesn’t matter if its type 1 or type 2, once a diabetic always a diabetic….right or wrong? A kid on youtube (looks like he’s 11-12 years old) is trying to tell me that diabetes is “caused by lack of exercise and diet” and that “by having a healthy diet and exercising on a regular basis, its 100% curable” Diet and exercise only helps CONTROL diabetes, not cure it.
sorry, I’m just a little irritated by this kid
heres the link if anyone wants to see his video/comment to me:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-qPToPe7…

I haven’t watched your video yet, I’ll do that next. But I’ve never heard of a case of diabetes that’s been cured. I’ve heard that it can be controlled to where it’s like you don’t have diabetes (type 2) … but you do still have it.
    –edit–
I just watched the first 30 seconds, got disgusted and closed the window. I find it really upsetting when I see someone who seems to take it so seriously, yet gets it so wrong. I see you told him he’s wrong in the comments section … good job on that! I may leave a comment for him too in a little bit. We’ll convince him :D
    –edit–
Okayyy … but I’m making a new youtube account to do it with. I’m not using my regular account to disagree with a kid who calls himself “hacker” LOL

  • Dr. L says:

    correct.

  • i take the blame says:

There is no cure for diabetes, once you’re diagnosed with diabetes, you’ll have it for the rest of your life. However, that doesn’t mean that you’re resigned to shots and test strips and daily medications. If you’re in the early stages or it’s not severe, you can maintain control of it strictly with diet and exercise and make sure that it doesn’t get any worse. But there’s no way to get rid of it, and for the rest of your life you’ll always have it, even if your blood sugar and hemoglobin a1c is in the “normal” range.
But it’ll be a constant battle, because if you let it slide, it can easily get out of control and you can become dependant on insulin and other medications.

Diabetes can be brought on by being overweight. In this case, losing weight and getting an appropriate amount of exercise can remedy the problem. However, there are cases in which a person may have been born with diabetes (juvenile diabetes) or have developed type 2 diabetes. In theses cases the person has the disease for life.
A woman can also develop type 1 diabetes during pregnancy and it goes away after giving birth. However, in this case, the woman has strong chances of fully developing diabetes in later life.

I think a good exercise and diet program can control most diabetics and can cure a mid form of diabetes but a person should also monitor from then on after.

  • Máire Siobhán says:

    Type 1, once is always.
Type 2, not necessarily. Many people with type 2 lose weight and watch their diet and get their blood sugar back under control. Type 2 IS caused by lack of exercise, diet, and body fat. Type 2 is very different from Type 1.

You should’ve seen 60 Minutes on T.V. last week. Obese, diabetic people that had bariatric bypass surgery–linking the stomach to the large intestine–for weight reduction; were shocked that they had been “cured” of diabetes immediately. The hypothesis is that something in the small intestine triggers the disease–studies on rats have now been done, with the same results. It was a completely accidental discovery—but, so was penicillin, etc. Sounds like there’s a lot of hope.

  • ♥ terry g ♥ says:

Type 2 diabetes can be controlled in many (not all) people with diet and exercise, and oral meds. Type 1s can control but NOT CURE their diabetes much more easily with diet and exercise.
I applaud this kid for his efforts but someone really should have watched the video BEFORE it was posted online.
EDIT: By the way, what an obnoxious little snot!

  • SugarBab says:

Right. There’s no cure. There are treatments which can cause a temporary remission of symptoms in some people, but there is no cure.

Type 1 you have forever. But Type 2 , if brought under control the first year you have it, it is possible you can be diabetes free. And to do this DIET and EXERCISE are the key.Hey he’s just 12 yrs. old, you could have just laughed at him. Don’t be angry precious.People just don’t understand what we diabetics go through.Yes If I had it to do over would I have changed my habits. Why of course I would. Well MAYBE!!!! Boy oh boy do I hate this disease!

  • Mr. Peachy® says:

Yes, but that doesn’t mean you should not fight it. I fought my type two and won. I don’t take any medication and handle it with diet and exercise. There’s plenty of hope out there for type ones as well… http://www.massgeneral.org/diabetes/facu…
She’s had quite a bit of success getting beta cells to regrow and retrain the immune system to not attack them any longer.
Never give up… that’s my motto.
