Time Off For Doctors?

April 2nd, 2011 § Tags: , Posted in Diet § § 7 comments

I work in a small office – 3 of us. My boss says she doesn’t like 2 off us being off at same time.
I had a doctors appointment (just recently being diagnosed with diabetes but can be controlled with diet and exercise) in june but as my collegue was off i couldnt go.
I got a new appointment. It was for after my holiday and I said to my boss. Got back from holiday and found out she is taking a holiday then, so had to cancel again.
Made a new appointment and found out my collegue is off again.
The dietician (who my appointments are with ) is only at my clinic once a month. I would only be away a couple of hours and I have the first appointment of the day.
How do i ask my boss that this important and i need the time off. I feel she doesnt think it is important as I dont take meds.
I have other appointments to take – blood taking, retinal photography (which i had to cancel because my collegue was off) and general health check.
Can anyone advise. Thanks

I think your boss needs educating…you need to explain how important it is for you to have these checks, some being once a month and others like the retinal photography are only once a year, (don’t forget to arrange another appointment for this by the way)…ask your diabetic nurse for some leaflets that she might like to read!!
You may also want to point out that people with diabetes are protected under the Disability Discrimination Act, making it unlawful to discriminate against an individual on medical grounds. To find out more about your rights visit the Diabetes Uk website at http://www.diabetes.org.uk/dcn or contact the Disability Rights Commission http://www.drc.org.uk or call 08457 622 633.
Hope i’ve been of help to you and good luck.

I would schedule the appointment well in advance and turn in a request for a day off to go to the appointments.
Might be if you would have a discussion with your boss on the importance of keeping you healthy and complication free IF you can keep your appointments instead of having to cancel all the time both you and your office will be further ahead if they aren’t short due to your being ill.

Try the short obvious path first. Tell you boss about you condition and why the appointments are necessary. Have share some of your pain. If she does not respond favorable, then you may have tough choice to make. It’s your health! Defend it!
    Best Wishes.

I am almost certain that you are allowed necessary health appointments during work time which cannot be scheduled at any other time. I get time off with pay for hospita appointments and blood tests which need to be taken in the morning.

Make your appointment and tell your boss, giving her plenty of advance notice, that you will have to keep it come what may – so please will she make sure your colleague is there.

Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates. Eat balanced meals with whole grains at regular times. Losing weight helps control diabetes.
