Could I Have Diabetes?

August 31st, 2010 § Tags: Posted in Insurance § § 6 comments

I know that I suffer from frequent hypoglycemia. once, I didnt eat during the course of 24 hours [at the time I was on a medication that made me not want to eat] and I ended up fainting. I usually shake, when my blood sugar is low. And I lose control of my eye muscles… which makes them shakey. I also suffer from many other low blood-sugar related symptoms.

I can’t go to a doctor to be diagnosed because I dont have health insurance.

I know Diabetes runs in my family, is it possible that I may be?
Im just wondering.

Yes, I have experienced hyperglycemia. Atleast, it seems so from those symptoms that you described.

Is that bad?
Frequent urination yes
Excessive thirst yes
Extreme hunger yes
Unusual weight loss sometimes
Increased fatigue yes
Irritability yes
Blurry vision yes
Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet yes
Skin that is dry or itchy yes

Answer
It is a possibility that you can develop diabetes, especially if there’s a family history of it. Diabetes runs in my family too and I’m also hypoglycemic. My doctor indicates that due to my history and my current condition, this could easily turn into diabetes, that is why she monitors my blood levels every few months. Here are some things to look for:
Frequent urination
Excessive thirst
Extreme hunger
Unusual weight loss
Increased fatigue
Irritability
Blurry vision
Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet
Skin that is dry or itchy
Frequent infections or cuts and bruises that take a long time to heal are also signs that something is amiss.

Finally, if your breath smells sweet and fruity, this could be an indicator of diabetes.

I would buy a cheap glucose meter and check my blood glucose upon waking and a 1/2 hour after meals. You can also get one for free at freestyle (link below).

Lastly, I would check if there’s free clinics in your area that might be able to give you a blood test to check you levels. I hope this helps.

yes there is a possibility that you have diabetes. and if you really think that you do you NEED to go see a doctor because it can become a serious health hazard if not checked. but before going read up on symptoms of diabetes and the chances of it being passed on to you if it runs in your family because that usually raises the chance of a person getting most ailments.

highly possible, actually. have you experienced hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)?
some symptoms of high blood sugar are: frequent urination, frequent hunger, extreme thirst.
just be weary of your blood sugar and what you eat.
when you have “hypo”, take 1-2 glucose tablets. they raise your blood sugar quickly and you can buy them over the counter at your drug store.

Eat regular meals with whole grains. Whole grains turn into sugar slower over a longer period of time. Keep granola bars near for lows.
    Check your blood sugar.

  • Ph-Stude says:

Hypoglycemia is usually unrelated to Diabetes except in the when a person is being treated with insulin or some Diabetes drugs.
Type 1 is where there is an immune response in the body causing damage to your bodies ability to produce insulin. Patients with type 1 diabetes are most likely to experience symptoms. They commonly are fatigued, have to urinate frequently, have to drink a lot of water, weight loss with increased hunger, and more frequent infections. If they have very high sugar levels you may have a bit of an acetone smell on the breath.
Type 2 is rarer in young thin patients, but with age, increased weight, lack of exercise it becomes more common. Patients with type 2 diabetes usually (but not always) have no symptoms, so they don’t even know they have a problem. They do experience some of the same symptoms as type 1 diabetics but only if they have really high sugar levels. They may experience weight loss or weight gain with either increased or decreased hunger. Its hard to say.
I’m not sure how much it would cost in the states, but in Canada they sell cheap blood sugar monitors for 30-40 dollars with strips, meaning that you could check your blood sugar all you wanted. Or you could ask one of your family members to check your blood sugar for you. If your sugars are at or around 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/l) when you take it randomly then you likely have diabetes and need to see a doctor.

If you can’t go to the Dr. get a glucose kit over the counter and check your blood sugar a few times and see what they are. You can not diagnose diabetes from one of these kits but if your blood sugar is super high then you will at least know that you need to go to the ER.
