Diabetic, need eye surgery
Answer
My heart aches for you. I am also uninsurable on the private market and feel your pain. Even if you were to get insurance ‘now’, your pre-existing conditions would not be covered.
Check with the State Insurance Commissioner’s office – many states have programs for people who are uninsurable. For example, California has MediCal. Similarly, most hospitals have social workers who can help you navigate the options in terms of insurance.
It is unlikely that you would qualify for SS Disability.
Last resort, get a loan. Your eyesight is worth it…

search out a free clinic in your area my 30 year old son is diabetic and uninsurable and he had to have kidney stones removed and the clinic did it
Apply for indigent care at the hospital.
Most areas have a free or low-cost health clinic that is able to help in cases like yours..You could also speak with the doctor who is to do the surgery–he may be willing to give you a break on his fee, & to arrange for a payment plan..Most hospitals have a fund called Hill-Burton Funds, which is money that you can apply for help in such situations. You have to prove your need, but they are generally quite helpful..You can also investigate state programs & speak with other doctors.. There is a way, somewhere!!
Seeif you qualify for Medicad, or visit a free clinic. Speak with your doctor and see if you can make a payment plan and pay out of pocket if that is your last option.
Apply for social security disability immediately. If you’ve worked for the past 8 years without more than a 3 month gap in employement, you could be eligible. After one year of being on disability you are then covered by Medicare. If you can’t wait this long, then check with your local Office of Family and Children to see what they provide in insurance. Also, check out local health care clinics as they offer sliding fees for people in need. If all else fails, call around physicians and ask if they have a plan where you can pay for half of the surgery up front (they’ll give you a huge discount if you do this) and request to be put on a long term payment plan post opt. Good luck!!!!
Talk to the doctor. They will sometimes work things out so you can pay monthly. So will the hospital
