I was forced into early retirement, because of the economy and slow job market, I went to the hospital in march and was diagnosed with diabetes, I have no health insurance. I am a 62 yr old male, I’m single and have no one at home. I recently obtained a part time job at wal-mart. To help with bills.
Are there any places to get food resources? Am I entitled to any medical resources?
Answer
Like most of us broke retirees you don’t have a lot of “rights” to demand but there are services out there that can help you not as an entitlement but out of people’s kindness and concern.
1. You may be eligible for Food Stamps check with the welfare office.
2. Go to www.feedingamerica.org to find out about other help with food
3. Look up www.needymeds.com for help with your diabetic meds
4, Call 211 (or look up number for your local United Way) to find out about other help resources including affordable medical care in your community also ask how to contact your local area agency for the aging and the number of your nearest senior center.
5. Watch the paper for announcements of giveaways etc
6. Go to www,yahoo.com look under groups and then do a search for Freecycle for your area – this is people giving away decent stuff they no longer need (furniture, clothes, etc)
7. if you can get food stamps you may be able to get a free cellphone https://www.safelinkwireless.com/EnrollmentPublic/home.aspx
8. You may be eligible for public housing or senior “affordable housing” Agency for aging can tell you
9. Check with community action agency and agency for aging re utility and heat supplements you may be eligible to receive.
