Insurance For Diabetes Will Cover Everything?

October 1st, 2009 § Tags: , Posted in Insurance § § 5 comments

im 18 and im a type 1 diabetic. my parents tell me as long as im still in school, the insurance will pay for everything.
my problem with this is that i dont really believe it. i see it as a way for my parents to force me to go to college, which i had planned to do, but on my own time and terms.
also, can someone tell me what i would have to pay when im on my own, with an average insurance policy? i use ~30 units of novolog, ~42 of lantus , and ~5 test strips daily

Usually you need to be in school to be covered under your parents’ insurance. Your other option would be to find a full time job that provides benefits. Such is life and a part of growing up!

Your parents insurance will probably cover you past the age of 18 only if you are in school. ONce you are not in school and over 18, you are not an dependent in their eyes.
If you try to get insurance on your own (not through work or another group policy), you may be denied or it will cost you money. you have a serious pre-existing condition that will cost any insurance company a bunch of money. Getting insurance on your own is not cheap which is why everyone wants to reform the healthcare industry.
Check if Walmart or Walgreens covers the medicine that you need as part of their 90 day supply program. If you’re lucky and they are on the list, it may only cost you $10 for a 90 supply. The test strips may not be covered and cost between $0.50 – $1.00 per strip depending on the brand.

I don’t think it matters if you are in school or not. If you are a dependent on your parent’s insurance, that will matter, but if you have your own policy, insurance should cover it all regardless of whether or not you are in school. I am type 2, and am not in school, and all of my meds and supplies are covered.

unfortunantly, it DOESNT cover everything. a lot of the times my parents have to fight with the insurance company because they wont cover the test strips, but they advertise that they do….
    its a really big mess.

health-quotes.talk4fun.net – try this one. I have their health insurancs and as I know they can provide coverage with preexisting condition.
