The operative word on cholesterol lowering of oats is MAY!! But oats like any other grain or cereal product will for sure RAISE your glucose. Either one of the varieties.
The operative word on any food that proclaims it MAY lower cholelsterol is MAY!! It cannot say for sure that it WILL. The same applies to Hypertension or high blood pressusre.
The only thing we know for sure is that any grain or cereal product is a higher Carbohydrate and is turned to sugar in digestion so raises glucose or blood sugar.
In the 1980s the Congressional Committee in charge of setting goals for USDA foods standards came up with a buzz phrase for starchy foods like grains, cereals etc. This buzz phrase is "complex carbohydrates" and has absolutely NO scientific research that they are good for us or even necessary in our diets. They had stockpiles of these commodities to get rid of since Russia wasn't paying for them. How to do that? Get the American public to eat more of them. Oats is one of those commodities!!
My grandparents could not have breakfast without first a small dish of stewed prunes (3), a half cup of oatmeal, 2 eggs, and a meat of some kind along with 2 slices of toast. Neither was fat, both worked hard on the ranch. Grandpa died of heart disease, Gram died of worn out body at 96!
I am not convinced that any form of gaggy oats is necessary to good health.
my link to research on heavy carbs is missing on this new computer! Sorry! It was an article on drugs.com and I can't find it.

For a diabetic, the best option is NO oats as they are very high in carbohydrate and will quickly spike blood sugar.

It's never too late to stop it, although if you're still running a high A1C then I would think you'd need to replace it with something. Talk to your doctor about why you want to discontinue this medication, and he will give you your options.

298 is very high. She needs to start Metformin and Glimepride yesterday. Then if numbers don't come down then Insulin.
As for the healthy lifestyle , here's the way:
There are 4 key steps to controlling glucose levels :
1) EXERCISE- Walking is fine but Nordic Walking is Great. Exercise also lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and lowers Blood Pressure. Google it.Exercise is Non-Negotiable !!!Thats why it is Number 1 on the list.
2) Knowledge- http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.ph… This is a great site for info
3) Meds. Metformin to start. Never , ever take Actos or Avandia. They may kill you. Bone fractures, heart problems and what diabetics really don't need is that they change Bone Stem Cells to Fat Cells. Also never ever take Onglyza or Januvia . They can can inhibit the bodys immune system and let cancer spread.
4) Diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm
This take Attitude and dedication. You say she wants to do it through healthy lifestyle, but one thing you didn't mention >has she been a diabetic for a long time?Or this is the first time she checked. Because is she has been diabetic for a long time then why hasn't she practiced a healthy lifestyle before?Any numbers over 140 causes damage. Blindness, amputations, kidney failure and heart disease.
Take care

You might want to read the book I am reading called Dr. Neal Barnard's program for reversing diabetes, and it talks a lot about eating the correct foods and to eat more foods with a low Glycemic Index (where the sugars in the food are slowly absorbed into the bloodstream VS quickly absorbed.)
It is best to read the whole book to figure everything out.
In the meantime, I suggest giving up margarine, butter, and cheese. Lessen milk products, and see how much better you feel in a week or so.

As someone once told me "the closer to the field, the better." The less processing the better. Old fashioned oats are better than quick oats, steel cut is better than old fashioned, and the real deal, oat groats are the best. I've learned to cook them in advance...soak for a while, then put in a slow cooking until they're almost cooked...just a little bit chewy. They keep well in the refrigerator, and heat in a second in the microwave. You can add lots of things...cinnamon, cocoa power, nuts, whey powder, yogurt...anything you like. You can also add it to salads, soups, or anything. Just use your imagination. Quick, easy, and really good for you, plus lots of fiber. TC

Well, have you made any lifestyle changes since you were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes? Are you well controlled?
It's not unheard of for those in the earlier stages of Type 2 diabetes to go into "remission" without medication if they follow a healthy meal plan, lose weight, and exercise regularly. If you have done all of those things, and your blood sugar is still out of control, then medication is your next step.
The key is to really make the effort, and not excuses. Many people would rather pop a pill than make healthy food and get off the couch. I'm not saying this is the case with you, but you get my point.
All of that said, lifestyle changes for some are not enough. Only your doctor can determine if you can stop medication or not. How is your control? What do you eat? Are you overweight? Be real with your doctor and yourself. If you have not made any lifestyle changes, there may still be hope for you if you act soon. But that is only a chance, not a promise. If you need to make changes, start. You can do it!
That said, take care of your body and put it first. You only get one body.
P.S. I'm not sure what the person above is talking about when they say to cut out "milk products". Actually, low fat dairy has been shown to HELP Type 2 diabetes. That person is confusing the 2 main types of diabetes. It is Type 1 diabetes that *may* be linked to an "allergy" to cow's milk protein/casein. Type 1 diabetes is the severe rarer genetic autoimmune kind that typically appears suddenly in childhood. It is an entirely different disease from Type 2 diabetes.

Well, have you made any lifestyle changes since you were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes? Are you well controlled?
It’s not unheard of for those in the earlier stages of Type 2 diabetes to go into “remission” without medication if they follow a healthy meal plan, lose weight, and exercise regularly. If you have done all of those things, and your blood sugar is still out of control, then medication is your next step.
The key is to really make the effort, and not excuses. Many people would rather pop a pill than make healthy food and get off the couch. I’m not saying this is the case with you, but you get my point.

Insulin is made naturally within the Pancreas. Those with diabetes either cant make enough insulin or cant make any insulin.
You should definitely consult a doctor.
Has she even been diagnosed with diabetes?
I don't know how you test BM's over in the states but in the UK anywhere between 4 - 7 is normal.

Firstly about your weight. This is a sign of stress. A person who is stressed may use a number of what I call "coping mechanisms" one of those is eating and there is a good reason. Most of stress involves others. People trying to manipulate and control you or people who are harmful through jealousy etc. The key is relationship and insightfulness that causes you to become aware of something wrong. Why is eating a solution? Eating means stimulating the digestive system and that means gaining a high parasympathetic nervous system tone. This is also the nervous system that facilitates rest. So if you eat you will get the same effect as rest. If you eat something greasy then you get this effect for longer because the digestion of fats takes longer so your system is held at rest longer. The answer is to get rid of the problem that causes you stress. Check out your thoughts. These will give you clues as to who is behind your problems. Other people can affect us. If it runs in your family, then family members may be involved or people that are associated with your family. There is no evidence of it being genetic other than family history, but family history is also about how one generation can emotionally affect the next and each other! You do not have to get diabetes and you can loose the weight without diets and drugs once you isolate and deal with the specific problem that is causing you stress.
Check out my blogs (aka annavictoria) at http://www.thoughts.com/annavictoria/blo… where I have started to talk about how other people can affect our health and without even looking suspicious!

There are 3 main warning signs that you must listen what your body is saying because it can save your life. The first critical warning sign is thirst. The person with high blood sugar may have a constant thirst. The body tries to filter the excess sugar from the blood by passing it in water through the kidneys.
The next sign is hunger. Being hungry frequently stems from the fact that a person with diabetes cannot utilize sugar well as an energy source within cells. The sugar is circulating in the blood, but the cells can't absorb it to use it as a fuel.
Frequently urinating is another diabetes warning sign. The kidneys are passing urine out the body to get rid of the sugar. The body continually is dumping the sugar out causing the diabetic to have to urinate often. It is amazing how the body fights to balance back the blood sugar.
Type 1 does tend to appear suddenly in most cases. You seem to have a genuine problem that needs to be addressed so it is a good idea to book an appointment with your doctor in order to obtain a simple blood glucose test and further testing, if needed. Early intervention and treatment is crucial in avoiding complications from glucose impairment.
Hope this helps.

What you eat and drink or don't eat and drink, does not have any effect on causing diabetes!! You could just sit and eat candy and cookies and drink cokes all day every day and not have any other food, and unless you had the genes to get diabetes you would merely ruin your teeth!!
Sounds like you may have more problems than the UTI. Do go see the doctor again to have blood work done.

1,
The success of bariatric surgery has been very consistant. People are having both the lap-band method and the gastric bypass for weight loss, and have found it also cures, or almost cures diabetes. From the articles I have read, the lap-band method has been more effective at curing diabetes. It is amazing.
However, it is very serious surgery, and very expensive. You must do a lot of research before you decide to do this.
On a purely medical platform, there are other drugs in the market, but metformin seems to be the best for diabetes. Talk to your doctor about that. Your pharmisist can also give you a lot of information.
You can read more about these and other diabetic issues at:http://www.diabetesselfmanagement.comhttp://www.dlife.com

Most diabetics I know who eat oatmeal choose steel-cut oats. Is that the same as old-fashioned oats?
Oats can lower cholesterol in the general population, but the problem is that oats usually raise blood sugar levels in diabetics. High blood sugar and high insulin levels (due to insulin resistance) can elevate LDL, lower HDL, and raise triglycerides. Thus, oats may not be the best choice for a diabetic who wants to lower cholesterol. In fact, just getting blood sugar under control can dramatically lower cholesterol in diabetics.
My total cholesterol was 180 when I was diagnosed and my triglycerides were 115. After going on a low-carbohydrate diet for a year, my total cholesterol dropped to the 130s and my triglycerides dropped to 70. My HDL went up and my LDL went down (81). I ate mostly saturated fat and protein and avoided grains, cereals, potatoes, rice, corn, fruit, and sugar.
So, that'd be my advice to any diabetic. If you eat oatmeal to lower your cholesterol, be aware that high blood sugar from the oats may be working against you. The best thing you can do is lose weight, control blood sugar, exercise, eat heart-healthy fats, and cut out high-glycemic carbohydrates. Also, take a fish oil supplement.

Your mom's ways to reduce glucose level in blood will NOT work.
Your mom do not need insulin injection at the beginning stage. She can take oral anti-diabetes medications such as metformin & glipizide (before meal). There are also other anti-diabetes medications in the market.
I suggest your mom to seek advise from local doctor, as her blood glucose need to be monitored according to the anti-diabetes medications prescribed.

Cut out as many forms of carbohydrates as you can. Breads, tortillas, chips just to name a few. The carbs from fruits and veggies are fine and lean meats. And whole wheat, oat products are fine.
Try putting in bulky veggies celery, carrots, lettuce, green leafy veggies. They are lower in calories and because of that you can eat a whole lot of them to get full without the side effects of a large number of calories.
Drink more water and cut out anything that has calories in it. Drinking a glass of water before you eat anything can lesson the feelings of hunger and make it where you feel fuller faster.
You can ask your doctor to a referral to a certified diabetes educator. they can teach you how to eat better and manage your symptoms.

It's very normal. I have type 1 diabetes too and when my blood sugar gets high I drink tons of water, get bitchy, pick fights with my mom, get very irritated and all I want to do is sleep. And to answer the last part of your question just make sure she takes her insulin and drink plenty of water and get some rest but keep an eye on her. But if the problems persist she should think about going to her doctor to change her insulin dose so her sugar won't get so high and switch to an insulin pump which is way better than needles and insulin pens

First of all, it is good that your mom is testing. If she does have type II diabetes then her body has developed an almost autoimmune response to her own insulin. Many diabetics take Glyburide or other oral diabetic agents to increase their bodies insulin receptors. Lifestyle changes, exersize and healthy eating are great. Sometimes however, these changes are not enough and insulin is necessary. I wonder why she hesitates to see a Doctor. She can have a blood test called an A1C to see how her body responds to the glucose in her blood for the past three months. In my practice as a Registered Nurse, I see the end results of not caring for diabetes. Renal failure, skin issues, loss of limbs and many other illnesses stem from uncontrolled diabetes. Encourage your mom to get the professional help she needs. Good luck to you!

That lactation consultant should be FIRED. If your milk had not come in by the time you took your baby home she should have known something was wrong and your baby had to have something to eat. You need to be checked by your OB/GYN to make sure you don't have an infection. There is nothing wrong with bottle-feeding your baby. It's better than your baby getting sick.

I don't understand how your dietition could be licensed. Not to vilify him/her, but I wonder if he/she really is a certified dietition. Putting a person in the condition of hypoglycemia is extremely dangerous, and it may kill that person's life.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia included: Low concentration, irritation, confusion, tremor, etc. If hypoglycemia persists for a longer time, it may put a person into a coma, because your brain may eventually have insufficient oxygen.
I know this because I know someone with Type 1 Diabetes that takes insulin, and I've done a research for a health class on Diabetes. Taking too much insulin can cause hypoglycemia.
Having listed the symptoms of hypoglycemia, I doubt that you can focus better when you're hypoglycemic. But you could be right about being able to concentrate better with hypoglycemia, since it's your body, you know what you feel. Besides, everybody has different symptoms and reacts differently to those symptoms and the condition.
But make sure that you do eat your dinner after you finish your work, if you really have to be hypoglycemic throughout the time that your working. However, I suggest that you see a doctor - an endocrinologist or another dietition - because working while being hypoglycemic is very dangerous and can be fatal.

I know it's pretty sorry, but just try adjusting your diet somewhat and get any type of exercise, even if it's just walking every now and then. At least you have an opportunity to not become diabetic. I'm type I. I'm pretty much stuck. I know it doesn't seem fair, but I hope things work out for you.

Insulin should be a very last resort. If she is type 2 diabetic, then she is absolutely correct in that diet and exercise can completely correct the problem. Type 2 diabetes is no longer considered incurable by the type endocrinologists who have shown that the key is to lose body fat, especially fat off the abdomen. She SHOULD however consult a Dr. She needs to know how high her blood sugar has been running. That is a test called an hba1c. It will give the current average of all the blood sugars she has been running so she can have an idea of how much body damage may have been done. It may be they can get her blood sugars down on a temporary regimen of insulin or maybe just with some medications. But if your mom is sincere and follows through, reducing her weight even by ten percent will have a positive effect on her diabetes.
